No surprises as Milburn calls it quits with the Cats

Geelong's 2007, '09 premiership star Darren "Dasher" Milburn has decided to hang up the boots.

The 34-year-old was left disappointed after missing selection in this year's finals series.

He played 292 games with the Cats with only Ian Nankervis (325 games) and John "Sam" Newman (300 games) playing more games.

Milburn played in 181 wins which is a club record.

Triple premiership player and 2011 flag captain Cameron Ling retires on grand style.

Two-time premiership player Cameron Mooney has also called it quits.

Also a one-time premiership with North Melbourne, Mooney couldn't break into the senior line-up during the finals.

Mooney was thrilled to see strong-marking forward Tom Hawkins play so well in the finals, especially in the second half of the grand final.

"Pav" wins Freo's best and fairest award for sixth time

It's six best and fairest wins for Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich.

"Pav" has clinched a surprise win over emerging superstar Nathan Fyfe in Freo's top individual award.

He polled 144 votes to win the Doig Medal with Fyfe polling 141 votes.

Greg Broughton was third with 118 votes and Luke McPharlin finished fourth with 108 votes.

Fisher upsets hot favourite Dal Santo in St Kilda's b 'n' f

Ultra-consistent backman Sam Fisher is celebrating a shock win in St Kilda's best and fairest award.

In an unbelievably close vote count, Fisher won the Trevor Barker Medal after polling 557 votes to pip smooth-moving midfielder Nick Dal Santo on 554 votes by three votes.

Improved run-with specialist Sean Dempster finished third on 490 votes with Leigh Montagna on fourth with 487 votes.

Goalsneak Stephen Milne was fifth on 418 votes followed by Clint Jones on 401, Adam Schneider on 392, Nick Riewoldt on 384 , Brendon Goddard on 376 and Jason Gram on 371.

It's Fisher's second best and fairest award following his win in 2008.

Dal Santo is yet to break through to win the top honour.

Sam Mitchell tops votes at Hawks

Fearless ball magnet Sam Mitchell is Hawthorn's current-day Peter Crimmins.

So says Marngrook Footy Show host Grant Hansen.

"Sam Mitchell attacks his footy in exactly the same style as the great Peter Crimmins," he said.

"No surprises that Sam wears Peter's famous No. 5 guernsey," he said.

Mitchell capped a sensational year by winning his third best and fairest award (Peter Crimmins Medal).

Replaced as captain by Luke Hodge, Mitchell kept his chin up and played brilliant footy as the Hawks almost made the grand final (the brown and golds suffered a heart-breaking three-point loss to Collingwood in the preliminary final).

Mitchell polled 177 votes to beat improved backman Josh Gibson on 160.

Play-maker Grant Birchall's outstanding form across the half-back line saw him finish third on 138.

Lance Franklin polled 135 with Luke Hodge 126, Jordan Lewis 125, Liam Shiels 105, Cyril Rioli 103, Brad Sewell 102 and Shaun Burgoyne 86 making up the top 10.

Gibson won the most consistent and best finals player awards.

Lewis won the best clubman award with Paul Puopolo named the best first year player.

Glass pips Priddis on a comeback in West Coast's spine-tingling vote count

What a nail-biter!

West Coast's prestigious best and fairest award couldn't have been any more exciting.

Captain Darren Glass has beaten Matty Priddis on a comeback after both finished on 398 votes.

Full back Glass played one less game than midfielder Priddis - 24 and 25 respectively.

Incredibly, ruckman Dean Cox finished just one vote behind on 397.

Shannon Hurn was fourth of 374 votes with Luke Shuey making up the top five on 359 votes.

Then followed Adam Selwood on 342, Nic Naitanui 338, Andrew Embley 333, Mark Nicoski 333 and Scott Selwood 332.

Josh Kennedy was leading goalkicker with Luke Shuey winning the rookie of the year award.

Brett Jones won the Chris Mainwaring Medal (best clubman).
