About The Show
The Marngrook Footy Show is fast becoming Australia’s most popular weekly football program with its infectious mix of personalities, humour, analysis, information and Indigenous history and culture.
The weekly national television show is broadcast live nationally on ABC2 and on delay on NITV. Launching into its fifth season, the show is generating growing audiences each week as the word spreads!
The original concept of the program was developed by host Grant Hansen in the mid 90’s when he was working as a radio announcer in Melbourne. The keen football follower was so disappointed by the complete lack of Indigenous football commentators and hosts in both TV and radio that he started his own football program. In 1997 The Marngrook Footy Show was born and began broadcasting on Melbourne radio. Its immediate popularity saw the program beamed around Australia via satellite the next year.
The first Marngrook radio show was hosted by Grant Hansen and Alan Thorpe with Western Australian correspondent Derek Kickett, South Australian correspondent Gilbert McAdam, Northern Territory correspondent Michael “Magic” McLean, Queensland correspondent Chris Johnson, and Sydney correspondent Robbie Ahmat. Legendary Western Australian footballer Stephen Michael soon became a regular as did former Footscray player and coach Terry Wheeler as the show became a staple part of the diet of all footy followers with its emphasis on Indigenous players and no holds barred style of footy talk and analysis.
After 10 years on the air Marngrook was developed as a TV show with the commencement of National Indigenous Television in 2007. The first program featured co hosts Grant Hansen and Gilbert McAdam joining Derek Kickett, Ronnie Burns and Alan Thorpe on the panel.
The Marngrook Footy Show proudly presents a weekly show jam packed with relevant footy information including all the teams for each round as well as news and analysis of footy issues and detailed match previews with an emphasis on Indigenous footballers. In addition we regularly pay tribute to the Indigenous pioneers of the game with feature stories outlining their huge contribution.
Marngrook also features female reporters Leila Gurruwiwi and Shelley Ware who hit the road every week to bring you exclusive interviews with players, stories from all the clubs and Tiddas tips.
